25 years ago: Worldwide first people's transport with a Maglev train

Bad influences from the Cold War

This day, which will be kept in mind of many peoples as the day of an interesting astronomical happening, remembers to an event exactly 25 years ago: On June 8th, 1979 the International Traffic Exhibition (Internationale Verkehrsausstellung, IVA'79) was opened by German Federal President Walter Scheel, Transport Minister Gscheidle and his American Colleague Brock Adams at Hamburg. During the traffic exhibition, worldwide first people's transport with a Maglev train was operated successfully. The "Kieler Nachrichten" issue from 06-08-1979 reported:

"...The Federal Republic experiences the third great traffic exhibition after the war. The predecessors of the IVA '79 took place in 1953 and 1965 in Munich. The predecessors of IVA '79 took place in Munich in 1953 and in 1965. The Hamburg event sets new accents with their comprehensive information into in all fields of domestic and foreign transport and communications. It is the largest show which ever gave it in Hamburg. The federation and the senate of the Hanseatic town provided 11.2 million DM. The execution for the charges of all nations, involved state-owned enterprises and private companies goes highly in nine-digit regions. Alone the Federal Republic as one of the leading traffic nations let cost her representation more than 32 million DM. Of this 25 million DM are allotted to the project of a maglev sponsored by Bonn.
The world fair of technology unites pioneering inventions, developments and achievements from about 30 countries. 18 participant states have built up national exhibitions. The German contribution signs under the motto "Knotenpunkt D" ("road junction D"). The elite is missing the Soviet Union in the circle. The interests of the east represent the CSSR, Hungary and the DDR (German "Democratic" Republic). Classing them as the most capable ones in the Locomotive, freight car, bus and truck construction. Hungary is world market leader at municipal area busses.
IVA '79 takes 120 000 square meters. The half of the area is allotted to 14 halls. The exhibition area is split. The exhibition grounds form the near Heiligengeistfeld for the sector at the Jungiusstraße, the others in St. Pauli. Both areas are linked by a 940 meters long demonstration way of the maglev on pillars as she will dash perhaps one day with 400 kilometers per hour by the area. In Hamburg it settles with speed 75.
The maglev is a magnet of IVA – although condemned to restricted operation by an objection of a citizens' action group. A "harp" of tracks impresses on the Heiligengeistfeld as another one..."

Why could it come to this restriction at all? During the two years before the traffic exhibition a lot citizens' action groups consisting of only a mail box were founded by the "Kommunistische Bund" (KB, communist federation) which was directed by Moscow. These action groups were in the "Bunte Liste" ("colored list"). 106 of 160 delegates were therefore temporarely put of the KB. Moscow tried with that to have an effect on the West German politics. The citizens' action group which finally was in a legal battle against the operation of the maglev was represented by communistic advocates who got their directives over the Soviet consulate in Hamburg. Obviously Leonid Brezhnev was against the presentation of high-technology (performed by the "big capital") and boycotted the event. Because of "an alleged development of the noise" it was obtained in front of the Administrative Court that this only was allowed to drive at most 75 kph instead of 90 kph. Its noises would actually have been drowned in the noise carpet of the traffic even at 200 kph.

The ideological seed put at that time has been wrapped up in the west with representatives of the leading layer of the Green Party later because members of the communist groups migrated later to the Green Party. It still has an influence on the thinking of some of them apparently.

This disastrous development seems to be jointly responsible for this besides the venality of single persons and faults at the moderation of such a large-scale project for the common peoples that the worldwide first commercial Transrapid track isn't in Germany into operation already today. This makes a contribution to the "German Desease", which is also a break for the ecomomical development of the Eureopean Community.

Yes, but up to the next Venus' Transit which will not be completely visible in this country is a little time to complete parts of a European magnet high-speed railroad net. And we don't want to wait up to the day on which this astronomical play can be seen again in Europe completely.
